A margin call occurs when losses on a leveraged position reduce its collateral below the required maintenance level. The trader may need to add collateral or reduce the position to keep it open. In traditional brokerage, you usually have time to respond, though it’s not always guaranteed. In many crypto markets, the process is automated: if the position reaches its liquidation threshold, some or all of it may be closed without advance notice.
